Many of us can get stuck when it comes to exploring our vocation or true passion in life. We may have a few ideas of what we could see ourselves doing but fail to zero in on the one thing that makes us feel truly alive. Although this “one thing” may be layered with multiple avenues, there is often a primary goal or value highlighted in your ultimate vocational work in the world. How do you wish to serve the collective? A helpful way to determine this service is through the ikigai.

Ikigai is a Japanese concept that translates to “reason for being.” It is connected to finding what brings meaning and purpose to our lives. Your ikigai is at the intersection of what you love, what you’re good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for. Your vocation, passion, and highest value all rolled into one.

Finding your ikigai can be a lifelong journey, but it’s worth it. Once you find it, you’ll have a sense of purpose that will guide you through everything life throws your way. And you’ll be happier and more fulfilled because of it. The best way to determine your ikigai is to experiment with different options until you find something that feels right.

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, so don’t be afraid to try new things. And don’t give up if you don’t find your ikigai right away. It takes time and patience to find something you’re genuinely passionate about. But the journey is worth it. When you find your ikigai, you’ll live a meaningful life to you. And that’s something everyone deserves. If you’re struggling with this practice, astrology can offer critical components to help with the exploration.

Steps to determining your ikigai through astrology.

1. Figure out what you love:

Because Venus indicates your love language, it can provide an exploration method. The venus signs based on what you love or what you’re passionate about are as follows:

Venus in Aries: You love adventure and competition. You’re drawn to things that are new and exciting. You’re also passionate about justice and standing up for what you believe in.

Venus in Pisces (February, 19-March, 20): You love compassion and empathy. You’re drawn to anything that is romantic or mystical. You also enjoy art and music and value spirituality and connection to the divine.

2. Figure out what you’re good at

Determining where your skilled and natural talent lies is more than a simple sign or planetary indication, but let’s look at your Mercury placement to help give us a hint:

Mercury in Aries: You’re good at anything that requires courage and physical strength. You’re also quick-thinking and have a sharp tongue.

3. Figure out what the world needs

This one is a bit more subjective as it blends the macro needs with your micro positionality. However, we can determine what the world needs based on one of the collective outer planets. So let’s look at how Pluto shows up in your chart to help indicate where you can support the world.

Pluto in Aries: The world needs your courage and determination. You can help by being a trailblazer and standing up for what you believe in.

Pluto in Taurus: The world needs your patience and stability. You can help by creating lasting structures and working hard to make them successful.

Pluto in Gemini: The world needs your intelligence and communication skills. You can help by sharing information and connecting people with each other.

Pluto in Cancer: The world needs your emotionality and sensitivity. You can help by providing nurturing support and care.

Pluto in Leo: The world needs your creativity and self-expression. You can help by bringing beauty into the world and inspiring others to be their best selves.

Pluto in Virgo: The world needs your precision and attention to detail. You can help by creating systems that are efficient and effective.

Pluto in Libra: The world needs your balance and diplomacy. You can help by creating peace and harmony wherever you go.

Pluto in Scorpio: The world needs your intensity and focus. You can help by digging deep and uncovering hidden truths.

Pluto in Sagittarius: The world needs your knowledge and understanding. You can help by sharing your wisdom with others.

Pluto in Capricorn: The world needs your planning and strategy. You can help by creating long-term goals and working diligently to achieve them.

Pluto in Aquarius: The world needs your originality and invention. You can help by thinking outside the box and coming up with new and innovative solutions.

Pluto in Pisces: The world needs your imagination and intuition. You can help by using your creativity to make the world better.

4. Figure out what you can be paid for:

With this exercise, it is crucial to consider your history of employment. What positions have earned you a consistent paycheck? Taking a look at this pattern can help you determine how and why you are paid as a first step. The second step is to take note of the zodiac sign on the cusp of your second house.

Second House in Aries: You are paid for your courage and determination. You are also paid for taking risks and being a trailblazer.

Second House in Taurus: You are paid for your patience and stability. You are also paid for your hard work and dedication.

Second House in Gemini: You are paid for your intelligence and communication skills. You are also paid for your ability to connect with others.

Second House in Cancer: You are paid for your emotionality and sensitivity. You are also paid for your nurturing support and care.

Second House in Leo: You are paid for your creativity and self-expression. You are also paid for your ability to inspire others.

Second House in Virgo: You are paid for your precision and attention to detail. You are also paid for your efficiency and effectiveness.

Second House in Libra: You are paid for your balance and diplomacy. You are also paid for your ability to create peace and harmony.

Second House in Scorpio: You are paid for your intensity and focus. You are also paid for your ability to dig deep and uncover hidden truths.

Second House in Sagittarius: You are paid for your knowledge and understanding. You are also paid for your ability to share your wisdom with others.

Second House in Capricorn: You are paid for your planning and strategy. You are also paid for your diligence and perseverance.

Second House in Aquarius: You are paid for your originality and invention. You are also paid for your ability to think outside the box.

Second House in Pisces: You are paid for your imagination and intuition. You are also paid for your creativity and kindness.

Another consideration for this step is to take note of what you would do if you weren’t paid. Are there any volunteer activities that give you joy? This final step asks you to think about what you would do with your time if money was not a factor.
